Installing to suspended (false) ceilings

Suspended ceiling grids are not a fixing — they’re a finish. You can’t hang a 30 kg curtain run off a grid tile, and you definitely can’t hang it off the T-bar. The fixing always goes to the structure above.

The right method

  1. Map the track run on the grid below. Plan hanger positions at 1.5 m centres plus bends and joining bars.
  2. Above the grid, span the run with unistrut (41×41 channel) supported back to the slab on threaded rod.
  3. Drop threaded rod through the grid at each hanger position. Use rubber grommets where the rod passes through tiles.
  4. Fix the track hanger to the rod below the grid.

What not to do

  • Don’t fix into the grid tile or T-bar.
  • Don’t use single-point anchors into plasterboard ceilings without back-fixings.
  • Don’t ignore the void contents — sprinklers, smoke detectors and cable trays all need clearance.

If in doubt

Our installation team handles suspended ceilings every week. If you’re self-installing and the void looks busy, send us a photo and we’ll talk it through.
